School Snack Guidelines
Laclede Co. C-5 School District School Snack Guidelines
Recently, our District Wellness Team was tasked with reviewing the District Wellness Policy and presenting it to the Board of Education for official approval. This was a rigorous process that included reviewing state and federal regulations to ensure district compliance. During this process, our team learned of areas in which our district needs improvement to meet guidelines.
Beginning January 2025, we will have a new procedure in place for parent-provided afternoon snacks in classrooms. Moving forward, classwide snacks must adhere to USDA Smart Snack standards which include calorie limits, sugar caps, and nutrient requirements.
Due to these changes, we encourage parents to provide individual snacks for their children whenever possible.
The following is a suggested list of snack items that could be provided to students for afternoon snacks, parties, and other celebrations.
Please note:
- Cupcakes may NOT be provided to classrooms for snacks during the school day.
- All classroom snacks must be prepackaged.
- Classroom snacks need to be allergen-friendly. Check with your child’s teacher to ensure the safety of all students.
Below is a short list of approved USDA Smart Snack items. Other items that meet fat, calorie, and sugar content may be provided. You can find comprehensive guidelines on the USDA Website. If you have questions about USDA Smart Snacks, please get in touch with Edie Pearcy, Director of Nutrition Services, at epearcy@jebk8.com or by calling 417-532-4837.
